The Raquette River is the second longest river in New York State running from Blue Mountain Lake in Hamilton County through a scenic and historic corridor into the St. Lawrence River at Akwesasne.  As the 174-mile river flows north to the St. Lawrence it passes through natural and man-made lakes as well as many towns and villages with varied connections to the river.

Raquette River Fishing Focus of May 9 Meeting at Wild Center

The Raquette River Blueway Corridor Initiative is looking for a few good fish stories!

The Blueway Corridor Initiative is inviting anglers of all types, including organizations that hold fishing-related events or activities along the Raquette River, to share their experiences, good and bad, with others hoping to promote fishing opportunities along the corridor.

“Go Fish- Luring Anglers to the Raquette!” is the theme of the Raquette River Blueway Corridor’s second annual Networking Meeting, to be held from 9:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. at The Wild Center in Tupper Lake. Anyone interested in attending the forum should contact Jim Murphy at jmurphy@vi.potsdam.ny.us to receive a registration form. Anyone interested in participating in this year’s Networking Meeting should RSVP by April 29, using the form provided here.

“Anyone with an interest in fishing, or the Raquette River in general, is invited to attend,” Murphy noted. “We’re especially hoping to hear from individuals, businesses and organizations that hold fishing tournaments, conduct stocking programs or stage educational activities along the corridor, who can give us their views on the current state of fishing along the Raquette and help us to brainstorm ideas for working together to support and promote regional angling activities.”

Mike Prescott Recognized for Stewardship Activities

Congratulations to RRBC Board Member Mike Prescott, whose hard work on behalf of the Raquette River has been recognized by the Northern Forest Canoe Trail (NFCT). Mike was recognized for being the primary Trail Maintainer for April's NFCT Trail Segment of the Month! Mike’s stewardship section of the NFCT and the Raquette River Blueway is from the northern section of Raquette Lake (from Tioga Point) to Long Lake (bridge in town).

Help Needed for July Trail Maintenance Work

The Northern Forest Canoe Trail (NFCT) will be conducting another work week/weekend on the Raquette River at two carries, Buttermilk Falls and Deerland, between Forked Lake and Long Lake in July.

Over the past two years, volunteer work crews have been working to improve these two carries, conducting badly needed trail maintenance work, including cutting back brush, bridging over wet areas and fixing/rerouting the trails at that section of the river.

NFCT trail crews will be back at work at the carry from Wednesday, July 13 to Sunday, July 17. The actual work weekend will be from July 15-17. Anyone who can help out is encouraged to contact Walter Opuszynski of the Northern Forest Canoe Trail at: walter@northernforestcanoetrail.org

Anyone that can should take the time to help out on this great endeavor, which is of great benefit to the Raquette River Corridor.

Many people who live along the river have worked together since 2004 to create a river corridor plan, the RAQUETTE RIVER BLUEWAY CORRIDOR PLAN, to:

·        Develop a framework for voluntary regional cooperation;

·        Encourage improvements to access and infrastructure;

·        Encourage responsible use of fragile ecosystems;

·        Provide corridor-wide information for visitors;

·        Support educational uses of the river corridor;

·        Encourage a joint approach to promoting assets, and

·        Promote the river as an engine driving local economies
